Steve Bacic

- picturework

Not that anyone has actually asked about it, but I just thought I'd show you the original version of some of the pictures. I do most of my picture editing with PaintShopPro 7. I am far from an expert, and I'm sure the pictures could be improved even more, but this is the way I do it.

I prefer getting my pictures from DVD, but that is not always possible.

I might then be able to get pictures from SVCD, VCD or MPEG files - in these cases, picture quality varies.

And finally, I might be able to get pictures from tapes - sometimes very old tapes of unimpressive quality. At the time of taping, I had no idea what I might use the tapes for eventually - but I'm very happy I didn't get rid of them.

So this page is just to show you how bad some of the pictures looked like originally and how they ended up looking.

From one episode of Andromeda, I might capture 1000 images which I then have to cull. I then have about 800 images to chose from when selecting the 30+ images that is my goal for each episode gallery. Selecting which images to use is one of the things that takes the most time.
I also like to remove the logo if the background's not too complicated.

The picture below is from a VHS PAL tape.
The untreated version is the original bmp, converted to jpg.
The treated version was blurred, edge enhanced and reduced to 75 % of the original size. The reduction helps unclear images get a little clearer - and save a little space on the server.

From the same tape as above.

Sometimes a nice image will be very dark, so I have to lighten it.

The treated version had the logo removed and was lightened and contrasted by 20% and reduced to 75 % of the original size.

Most images get this treatment since I prefer the pictures to "pop out" from the background. Either I use layers and make one layer screen mode or I just enhance lightness and contrast by 20%.

I found a new program to play with, NeatImage. It removes noise from pictures. I tend to overdo it a little, but I think marzepane skin is sometimes very cute - plus it illustrates the 'After' better.
